Counting Up

Probably the simplest method of addition is to simply count up. For example, lets say I am adding 6 and 3, I will go from 6 and count up 3 numbers. So now I start from 6, then I count 7, 8, 9 and 9 is my answer. Remember to start from the bigger number so you have to count less. One way of visualising this counting is with a number line.

When you want to solve by counting up you can imagine each number counted up is a little jump on the number line.

Counting Down

Counting down is the opposite of counting up and is also an easy way to do subtraction. We start from which ever number comes first (because in subtraction you can't swap around numbers) and count down from the other number. For example lets say I am solving 6 - 3. I start from 6 and count down 5, 4, 3 to get 3 as my answer. As with counting up you can visualise this with a number line.

As with addition you can usr the number line to help you imagine each number counted down as a jump on the number line
