Long Division

When dividing smaller numbers, you can easily memorise a reversed multiplication table or simply count how many of one number fit into another. However it gets harder when dividing big numbers. For this we need long multplication. Lets use an example of 96 divided by 6. First we arrange the numbers like this with a divider in the middle.

Then we take the number from the highest collumn of the number being divided, and divide it by the dividing number of the equation. So for example the number being divided is 96, so we take the highest collumn, which is the tens collumn, take the number there which is 9 and divide it by 6. We now get 1, which we put up in this collumn, then we put the 6 under the 9. The digit after the 6 is empty, so we put a 0 there.

Now we subtract the 60 from the 96 and we get 36, which we put below. Finally we divide the 36 by 6, and we get 6 with no remainder. We put the 6 after the 1 in our answer and our answer is 16.
